You may know you want a smaller home and still feel stopped by one question: What would we do with everything in this house? The furniture is only part of it. There are workshop shelves, holiday decorations, an old television, family photographs and boxes that have not been opened in years.

For a move in Mechanicsburg, Camp Hill or Carlisle, a useful cleanout plan does more than label items “keep” or “donate.” It gives each group a destination, a person responsible and a realistic date. Here is a way to begin without turning every weekend into an exhausting project.

Start with one small area and one confirmed destination. An accepted donation or a completed recycling trip moves the process forward more than a garage full of boxes waiting for a plan.

Choose what belongs in your next home first

If you have a floor plan, measure the furniture you use most and think about where it would fit. A favorite chair, a comfortable bed and a useful kitchen table may matter more than keeping a matching set intact. Include space to move around the furniture, not just its footprint.

If you have not chosen your next home, begin with duplicates and things you already know you no longer use. You do not need to make permanent decisions about your dining room or family keepsakes before comparing your next-home and senior living options.

Separate family decisions from removal decisions

Make a short list of belongings you want to offer to family. A photograph with dimensions is more useful than asking someone to remember what is in the basement. Ask interested relatives to agree on a pickup date that works for you.

It is also all right if no one has room for a piece you have loved. That does not diminish its meaning. You might keep one representative item or photograph a collection before letting it go. Keep a small “decide later” area for emotionally difficult choices so they do not halt everything else.

Confirm a donation before you load the car

For specific local organizations, contact details and pickup requirements, see my furniture donation guide for Mechanicsburg and Carlisle.

Donation acceptance depends on the organization, the item’s condition and current space. Before promising that a sofa, mattress or large cabinet will be donated, contact the intended recipient with photographs, measurements and a description of any wear.

Ask three practical questions: Will you accept this exact item? Is pickup available at my address? If pickup is offered, will the crew remove it from its current room? A porch pickup and carrying a heavy dresser down stairs are very different arrangements.

Keep a backup plan for anything declined. If an item is worth trying to sell, choose a deadline for that attempt and decide what happens afterward. A listing that stays online indefinitely can keep a room occupied right up to moving day.

Give old electronics their own plan

Cumberland County operates an electronics recycling program at 1001 Claremont Road in Carlisle. As checked September 27, 2026, the county lists a fee of $0.50 per pound for accepted items and asks that televisions remain whole, in their original casings.

The posted hours are Tuesdays and Wednesdays, noon–4 p.m., and the second and fourth Saturdays, 8 a.m.–noon, with county holiday closures. Check the linked page’s accepted-item list and current schedule before loading anything; not every item with a cord belongs in the same collection.

For computers and other devices holding personal information, arrange appropriate data removal before handing them over. If you are unsure how, get help from someone qualified to handle that device. Separately plan who will move a heavy television; the homeowner should not have to manage the lifting alone.

Check special collection dates early

Old household products may need a different destination from ordinary unwanted belongings. The county’s Household Hazardous Waste Program lists its next 2026 collection for Thursday, October 29, 11 a.m.–5 p.m., at the Claremont Road recycling center.

As checked September 27, the resident program requires an advance appointment and lists a $0.75-per-pound fee. Review its accepted and excluded materials and handling instructions before registering. An announced event does not guarantee an available appointment. If an item is unidentified or you are unsure where it belongs, ask the county recycling office at 717-240-6489 before transporting it.

For other items, the county’s Recycling & Waste page links to its A–Z disposal guide. Check your own municipality or hauler for bulky-item arrangements rather than assuming a nearby township uses the same service.

When hiring help, compare the actual scope

A cleanout, a move and an estate sale are different jobs. Describe what you need before requesting quotes: sorting assistance, packing, furniture removal, recycling trips or a final sweep after the move. Ask what is included, what costs extra and what happens to items that cannot be donated.

Before any crew arrives, clearly separate belongings that must stay. Keep personal papers, photographs, keys and everyday essentials out of removal areas. If adult children are coordinating from elsewhere, designate one contact and agree with the homeowner on what that person may decide.

Coordinate the cleanout with the home-sale plan

You do not necessarily need an empty house before asking for real estate guidance. A walk-through can help determine which rooms need attention for photographs, what furniture could remain temporarily and how removal dates fit with the move.

My Central PA downsizing guide explains how the pieces can fit together. Before adding painting or renovation to your list, also consider which updates may actually be worthwhile. The goal is a manageable transition, with fewer last-minute decisions.
